VEVAY, Ind. (Sydney Benter) -- A 4,200 square foot house with a panoramic river view is for sale for 00. There's a catch, though. The homeowners aren't selling you the house, you have to sell them on why you want it. Rhonda Pennington and her family have called the River House in Vevay home for more than 20 years. "It really is a gathering place, whether it was celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings, dinners--it truly, truly is a place with many stories and many memories," says Pennington. The family tried to sell the home traditionally, but didn't have much luck. They decided to try an essay contest after hearing about a similar contest to win a BB in Maine. "I thought, 'Why not?' It would give somebody a wonderful opportunity. We can't afford to give the house away. We have a mortgage like most people do with a home, but we could still make a difference, so we thought, this is it. We're going to try it," says Pennington. There's a 99 entry fee and the contest will only happen if there are at least 2,000 entries. All of the entry fees will be put into an escrow account until a winner is selected and all participants will receive an escrow certificate. The Penningtons are living out their dream of owning a farm and they hope whoever wins their home will be able to do the same. "It might be a family. It might be an organization who wants to turn it into something that could help many people for many years. I just want to make a difference for someone," says Penngington. The deadline to apply is Sept. 29, and there's an open house Saturday, Sept. 19. CLICK HERE to visit the contest website to learn more.
